We are fortunate in having a number of archeological
features. Under the HLS (Higher level Scheme)
we are able to protect sub-surface archaeological
features from damage through the standard forms
of cultivation such as ploughing and are odopting
reduced cultivation methods over these areas. We
have also established permanent grassland on
arable areas through natural regeneration.
The resulting Sward is managed by topping to
encourage tillering of the grasses.
Two Roman Villas have been
excavated on the land south of Finkley and a
large part of this end of the Estate is under
a reduced cultivation regime to protect the
numerous areas of archaeology here. Tumuli and
an Anglo-Saxon dyke have also been cleared and
protected from further damage. Trees and shrubs
can be very damaging to archaeological sites,
particularly buried deposits, as a result of
disturbance by root penetration, wind throw
or by attracting burrowing animals or sheltering
stock. The actions we are undertaking help to
prevent expansion of this unwanted scrubland.
